Eight out of ten residents in Östhammar municipality are positive to the planned establishment of the final repository of spent nuclear fuel in Forsmark. In Oskarshamn, 86 percent of those surveyed are positive to SKB’s plans to build a canister factory and an encapsulation plant in the municipality. Just over 75 percent of those surveyed in the two municipalities also responded that they would prefer for the issue of final disposal of spent nuclear fuel be resolved by those of us living today rather than leaving the issue to coming generations.
”It is gratifying to see that support for our work on nuclear waste storage continues to be so clear,” says Claes Thegerström, President of SKB. “We will complete the permit application process in the autumn, and then look forward to the review that the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority and the Environmental Court will perform.”
Annual poll
SKB has been conducting an annual opinion poll since 2003 that inquires about one’s opinion of having a final repository in one’s own municipality. This year’s poll was conducted by Novus Opinion between 29 April and 24 May 2010, and consists of 800 interviews with residents of the municipalities Oskarshamn and Östhammar.
Since the site for the future final repository was selected in June 2009, one of the previously posed questions that pertained to attitude to possible establishment of a final repository in one’s own municipality was re-formulated. The questions this year focused on respondents’ attitudes to the plants that SKB is planning to establish in each municipality.
