The Canister Laboratory

Spent nuclear fuel is placed in copper canisters before it is transported to its final repository. SKB’s Canister Laboratory in Oskarshamn is the development centre for encapsulation technology.

SKB uses the Canister Laboratory to develop and demonstrate the methods we use to encapsulate spent nuclear fuel. We have developed methods for manufacture, sealing, inspecting and testing the copper canisters.

We work primarily to test and refine the technique used to weld the lid onto the canister and ensure that the welding joints are properly sealed. The laboratory equipment that we use most are the friction welder, ultrasound and x-ray.

This is also where the encapsulation plant personnel that will be handling the canisters are trained.

International cooperation

SKB cooperates closely with its Finnish counterpart, Posiva, regarding canister fabrication and sealing techniques. Sweden and Finland cooperate closely because the two countries have approximately the same prerequisites for final disposal of spent fuel and intend to use the same disposal method.
