Press releases

Yesterday, March 16th, Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company, SKB, applied for a permit to build a final repository for spent nuclear fuel and a facility where the fuel will be encapsulated before being transported to the final repository. SKB’s application will now be reviewed by the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority and the Environmental Court.  The application will subsequently be presented for political decision in the relevant municipalities and by the government.

On Monday the 16th of November, the Swedish National Council for Nuclear Waste held a seminar on copper corrosion, where international experts were given the opportunity to pose questions regarding the alleged mechanisms of copper corrosion that have been discussed recently.

A technology platform for geological disposal of nuclear waste is being launched today in Brussels. The Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company – SKB – has led the preparatory work for the platform together with the Finnish company, Posiva, the French Andra, and the German BMWi. The vision is that there will be a repository for high-level radioactive waste operating in Europe by 2025.

Local support in favour of a final repository for spent nuclear fuel in one’s own municipality has increased somewhat in both Oskarshamn and Östhammar. This is shown by the annual public opinion poll that was conducted by Synovate on behalf of SKB.

The Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company, SKB, has decided today to select Forsmark as the site for the final repository for Sweden’s spent nuclear fuel.

The Swedish Radiation Protection Authority (SSI) has decided that deposition of waste at the final repository for low- and intermediate-level waste in Forsmark (SFR) may resume.

The Swedish Radiation Protection Authority (SSI) has decided that deposition of waste at the final repository for low- and intermediate-level waste in Forsmark (SFR) may resume.

The Swedish Nuclear Power Inspectorate, SKI, has given SKB an operating licence for the extended central interim storage facility for spent nuclear fuel (Clab).

Today SKB is submitting supplementary accounts to the Swedish Radiation Protection Authority (SSI)regarding the final repository for radioactive operational waste (SFR) in Forsmark.

Today SKB is submitting its latest research programme (RD&D -07) to the Swedish Nuclear Power Inspectorate (SKI). The method for final disposal of spent nuclear fuel described in the programme has now been developed to the point that licensing can begin. Furthermore, the siting work is in its final phase and SKB plans to select the site for the final repository in 2009.
