Safety Analysis, SR-Site

Over the years, SKB has conducted several detailed analyses
on the long-term safety of the final repository for spent nuclear fuel.
The SR-Site safety analysis was published in March 2011.

SR-Site is divided into three parts. The main purpose of the report is:

  • to evaluate the safety of the proposed repository in Forsmark, as defined by current Swedish legislation;
  • to provide feedback on the design work for the repository, for future detailed studies of the site and future safety analyses.

The main conclusion of the SR-Site analysis is that it is feasible to build the Spent Fuel Repository in Forsmark. The copper canisters and their cast-iron inserts are sufficiently resistant to withstand the mechanical and chemical stresses to which they might be exposed.

Damage to the canisters would be rare in the one-million-year time perspective encompassed by the safety analysis. The radiological impact after one million years will be far below 1 percent of the natural background radiation.
