Our safety analyses are based on data on the canisters, the bentonite buffer and the rock. We are also assuming a specific quantity of spent nuclear fuel and repository designs that are adapted to the site in question. These safety analyses enable us to determine which factors are most significant for safety. They also enable us to locate gaps in knowledge. This helps us to focus our research and technological development.
Analytical work is ongoing
SKB compiles new safety analyses as new knowledge is acquired and in particular when required for important decisions and applications. SKB's most recent safety analysis,
SR-Can, was published in November 2006. The next safety analysis, SR-Site, is due in 2010. The latter will be included in our application for the final repository and will be based both on data from the site investigations at Forsmark and the planning of the repository there.
All of our safety analyses are audited by public authorities and international experts.
The results of these audits are integrated into our work and taken into consideration in subsequent analyses.
