The safety analyses are based on data on the canisters, the bentonite buffer and the rock. We have also based the analyses on a specific quantity of nuclear fuel and a design that is adapted to suit local conditions. Using the safety analyses, we can determine the factors that will impact safety the most. We can also see where we might need to fill in any knowledge gaps. These analyses help us focus on the right things when researching and developing the technology.
Recurrently working with analyses
SKB produces new safety analyses as new knowledge emerges, especially before making important decisions and filing applications.
SKB's most recent safety analysis is entitled SR-Site and was published in March 2011. This analysis, which is part of the application for the final repository, is based on data from the site investigation in Forsmark and the planning of the repository there.
The next safety analysis will be conducted in conjunction with our application for starting up operations of the Spent Fuel Repository.
All of our safety analyses are reviewed by the Swedish authorities and international experts. Their views are taken into account every time we perform a new analysis.
