Consultation and dialogue

The applications for permits to build a final repository for spent nuclear fuel must include an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and a consultation report.

The EIS will describe what consequences the planned activity is expected to have for man and the environment and how they can be prevented or mitigated. The EIS is being developed in consultation. According to the Environmental Code, consultation shall include the siting, scope, design and environmental impact of the planned activity, as well as the form and content of the EIS.

The consultation procedure for applications under the Environmental Code and the Nuclear Activities Act is regulated by Chapter 6 of the Environ-mental Code. The consultation report will account for the consultation procedure, participants, discussions that were held and how the resultant viewpoints were handled.

Consultation report

In November 2006 SKB submitted an application in accordance with the Nuclear Activities Act to build and operate an encapsulation facility for spent nuclear fuel and to run it as an integral unit together with the Interim Storage Facility for Spent Nuclear Fuel (Clab). An EIS was attached to the application with a consultation report in the appendix.

The consultations in accordance with the Environmental Code for the final repository system and the Nuclear Activities Act for the final repository are being coordinated. They will be concluded about six months before the applications are submitted.
