Together with our collaborative partners we do substantial quality and environmental work in our existing facilities. We constantly strive to improve safety and environmental awareness – all in an effort to minimise environmental impact and protect those who live near nuclear power facilities.
Preventive work
In coming years we will be designing and building several new facilities, the most important of which is a final repository. This is where spent fuel will be deposited at a depth of 500 metres in the primary rock. Another major project involves an encapsulation facility, where spent fuel will be encapsulated in copper canisters prior to final deposition. In the planning of these new facilities SKB places great emphasis on preventive safety and environmental work. Safety is always a top priority and in the early stages of project work there are also many opportunities to achieve environmental benefits. Our preventive work makes it possible to take advantage of these opportunities. The preventive work is part of our work on Environmental Impact Assessments and results are used to optimise the safety and environmental aspects of the entire repository system.
Quality and environmental certificates
SKB has introduced an integrated management system, and an important milestone
was attained in June 2001, when we were certified in accordance with ISO 9001 and
ISO 14001.
