After many years of site investigations, SKB has submitted applications for a permit to build a final repository for Sweden’s spent nuclear fuel in Forsmark, in Östhammar Municipality. The site chosen for the Nuclear Fuel Repository is close to the Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant.
SKB opened its first facilities in Forsmark – a final repository for short-lived radioactive waste (SFR) – in 1988. SFR needs to be expanded to meet future needs, e.g. for decommissioning waste, and investigations for an extension are ongoing.
